THE LATE-NIGHT SHOPPER

Cedric McKellan heard something downstairs in the bookshop. That didn’t make any sense considering that Jean and Thaddeus had left to go on their trip. Unless something had gone terribly wrong on their journey, they should not have been back already.

His mind immediately wandered to another possibility—the other members of the Knights Templar had found them and were coming to reclaim them or punish them for their betrayal. If that was the case, then they needed to be ready for a fight.

Cedric reached out his hand to the side of his bed and found the hilt of his short sword where it rested beside him, always close at hand in case he needed it. He drew it from its sheath and tiptoed toward the door of the apartment, keeping an ear out for any changes. It sounded like someone was rummaging through the shop below, knocking things over and throwing things around.

It could have been the Templar. They had ransacked the shop before and would have no qualms about doing it again. Besides, now that he knew the truth about what the Knights Templar did with some of the occult items they found, he knew that there was a chance that they were stealing some of the things in the shop for themselves. They hoarded the things that they claimed to hate and that they claimed to destroy. Maybe they were just trying to acquire even more power. Or they really were following through on all of their creeds and were actually going to destroy the things in the bookshop.

Either way—it didn’t really matter which—Cedric fully intended to stop them.

He shook Nora awake and she immediately drew her own short sword, instinctively already ready for a fight. When you were hiding from people that were trying to hurt you, it was easy to fall into such defensive habits.

“What is it?” she asked, blinking hard to wake up but ready to start swinging her blade.

“Something’s happening downstairs,” Cedric whispered and pointed down to indicate the bookstore beneath their feet. “I’m going to go see what it is. Stay here.”

The truth was, he wanted to go down and confront the Templar himself. They had manipulated him, brainwashed him, and turned him into something that he wasn’t. He would be damned if he didn’t spill some of their blood before they brought him down.

“Are you sure?” she asked.

It would be good to have another knight by his side to help, but he would rather that at least one of them still had a chance to hide or get away if their opposition was too great. “Aye, I will be alright.”

Cedric quietly crept down the stairs to the occult bookshop, moving as quietly as he could. As he descended the staircase, he could still hear things being tossed about. They were really doing their best to ransack and pillage the place. It shouldn’t have surprised him. All of that cleanliness and talk about dignity and honor was just a bunch of lies, a smokescreen to mask what the Knights Templar actually was.
